Is Islam Irrelevant Today?

The question mark in the caption above says it all! There is a widespread undercurrent of doubts, even among Muslims, on the relevance of Islam in the world today. Muslims may not give expression to those doubts openly, but the doubts do assail a majority of them.
2. They see that Islam, as they understand it, prohibits interest; and the highest court in the Muslim country of Pakistan had even directed its government to realign its economic policies on that basis. The government was given some two years to do that; but at the end of the stipulated period the government pleaded its inability. The matter is dragging on indecisively there for years now!
3. In Islam, homosexuality is a crime that militates against the divine scheme. The Qur’aan speaks of an entire people – Prophet  Lot’s – destroyed because of their open advocacy and virulent practice of this crime. But, in this modern world, nation after nation is coming up to accept the aberration in sexual behaviour as natural. Same sex marriages are openly celebrated. Open practice of homosexuality is no longer considered a crime.
4. The Qur’aan says that natural calamities like the earthquake happen with the knowledge, and under the direction, of the Creator of all things, Allah. HE uses these to punish people transgressing divinely laid down law beyond a limit, and to warn others against such transgression. But the modernists dismiss the Qur’aanic assertions as superstitious beliefs. They claim that the calamities are geophysical natural phenomena and have nothing to do with any Intelligent Power exercising any conscious power over them. They, in fact, tend to deny the very existence of any such Power!
5. The Qur’aan prescribes cutting off of hand as punishment for theft and lashes for adultery. Except for a very few countries like Saudi Arabia, such punishments have been abolished in all other countries. The Qur’aanic punishments are now considered barbaric and inhuman.
6. A sister gets half the share of a brother under the Qur’aanic Law of Inheritance. And, one man’s evidence is equated to two women’s, for financial transactions, in the Holy Book. The modern world considers that Islam thus perpetuates an obvious gender inequality.
7. Mentioned above are the points, that occur to me presently, on the basis of which modern world generally considers Islam irrelevant now. Readers may like to apprise me of other points they have come across. But, in the meantime, let me critically examine the points mentioned herein above, one by one.
8. First and foremost, there is the economics question of levying interest on money lent or borrowed. If this interest is prohibited, the entire banking business, as it now stands, would come to a grinding halt. Some Islamic countries have obviated this problem by establishing what they call sharia-compliant banks. What these banks do is instead of lending money on interest as any other commercial bank does, they adopt other means like buying their clients’ requirements themselves and handing over these to their clients. For example, if a client wants to buy a residential flat, the bank will buy it and then give it to the client for use. The client then repays the bank in several instalments extending to a longish period of time. By the time all instalments get paid, the client ends up paying more than what the bank had paid originally for the flat. The difference could even be more than the total amount of interest that a commercial bank would have charged for the deal. So, the sharia-compliant bank gets its dues – not as interest, but as its margin of profit! There are other dubious ways in which such banks carry on their business by getting their dues anyhow, but nominally not as interest.
9. But is it interest that Islam prohibits? This is the question that Muslims themselves have unfortunately failed to examine critically. Their religious leaders have said that the Qur’aan does not define Ar-Riba it prohibits. So these leaders have themselves defined it to include interest in its ambit. But the Qur’aan repeatedly reiterates that it explains or clarifies everything so that its edicts are easily and clearly understood and implemented by the common people (refer Qur’aanic Verses 6:38, 16:89, 18:1, 18:54, 41:3, 54:18, 57:17 and there are other such Verses besides). So all those who say that the Arabic term Ar-Riba is not defined in the Qur’aan, do in fact contradict the Book they consider divine and therefore incontrovertible.
10. My studies of the Holy Book reveal that it does define the term Ar-Riba in Verse 30:39. I have detailed my findings in the book ISLAM AND INTEREST, the first chapter What is Ar-Riba of which explains how the said Qur’aanic Verse defines the term as gain that any party to a transaction contrives or manipulates to get by usurping the rightful dues, earnings or possessions of others. It is this Ar-Riba so defined – and not interest per se – that is prohibited in Islam.
11. As regards homosexuality, one need not be extraordinarily knowledgeable to understand that Nature has imbued the sexual urge in living beings for the specific purpose of propagating their respective species. Normally, this sexual urge is heterosexual between males and females, the two being suitably fashioned for playing their respective roles in propagation of the species. In such a circumstance, sexual attraction between two persons of the same sex is obviously an aberration. So long as this aberration remains shrouded in privacy, the society in general need not be proactively antagonistic, but if it is practised openly and aggressively, society can ill afford to simply sit back and wait for its inevitable ill effects. The Qur’aan speaks of the destruction of the ancient people of Lot, as those people had become aggressively homosexual en masse. It would be wrong to condone this aberration as an individual’s natural inclination or orientation. One could then even say that an individual is naturally inclined or oriented to have sexual relations with all sexually attractive individuals of the other sex. But human society, as we know it, cannot bear the burden of such unbridled heterosexual relations. It will no longer remain human. Homosexuality, if unchecked, too has similarly the potential to destroy human society.
12. As regards the point raised in paragraph 4 above, it is essentially an offshoot of the belief in a super-intelligent Creator of the entire universe and of all things therein. Being the Creator, He has absolute control over every item of His creation. Naturally, those who do not have this belief, condemn it as mere superstition. The inevitable question then that arises is as to why one should have a belief in such Creator. It is a vast subject, which can only be dealt with in no less than a book. Let me then present you the online booklet WHY DO I BELIEVE IN ISLAM. I have tried therein to deal with this question here as succinctly and briefly as possible. Human knowledge is pitiably limited. It cannot provide answers to many, many things that happen. A renowned scientist had once admitted that what scientists are doing is just pick up some pebbles in the vast seashore of knowledge. They are in no position to predict accurately when, why, where and how strongly an earthquake will happen next. In the dismal absence of such wherewithal, mankind cannot but believe in what the Creator says in revealed Scriptures.
13. The Qur’aanic Verse 5:38 prescribes hand-cutting of a thief as an exemplary punishment from the Wise Creator. In view of the very next Verse 5:39, this punishment is to be meted out only to such an incorrigible thief who is unrepentant for his crime or indulges in it repeatedly despite declaring his repentance of earlier crimes. The punishment to such a thief has necessarily to be exemplary, so that others, seeing his amputated arm, are effectively discouraged from committing the crime. Modern-day governments, in the name of humanitarianism, have very light penal provisions of imprisonment for a limited period. A hardened criminal takes it in his stride, goes to prison, and duly resumes his criminal activity afresh after being released. And, with his ill-gotten wealth, he may grease the palms of the police, and thus evade imprisonment again. And seeing his apparent prosperity, others may emulate him. Allah-given law is always better than man-made laws. So is the Allah-given penal provision of giving lashes to a person indulging in adultery! This latter punishment is to be meted out in public. The shame of such a punishment would be an effective deterrent for anyone inclined to commit the offence. And remember, the crime, to deserve this punishment, has to be so openly committed as to provide witnesses thereto!
14. A family constitutes the basic unit of society. The Qur’aan confers on the husband the position of the head of this unit. One cannot but admit that it is a natural conferment in view of the undeniable fact that he has been endowed with a greater physical strength than the wife. The Qur’aan, however, makes it abundantly clear that the wife has rights over the husband just as the husband has over her. The husband’s authority is only a shade above the wife’s just as the prime minister, in a parliamentary form of government, has over other ministers. This slight difference in their respective powers is essential for the smooth conduct of affairs within this basic unit of society.
15. Along with the conferment as head of the family, the Qur’aan puts the responsibility of adequately providing for the entire needs of the family on the shoulders of the husband. That is even when the wife may have her own source of income! In the circumstance, it serves due ends of justice for a man to have a greater share in ancestral property than a woman.
16. The Qur’aan, moreover, generally envisages a distinct division of work between a man and a woman. And their bodies are suitably fashioned accordingly. This does not mean that a woman cannot do a man’s job. She can, but the divine scheme apparently is to make it an exception rather than the rule. In the divine scheme of things, giving evidence on anything, monetarily related or otherwise, is normally a man’s job. A woman comes in only as an exception. It is only in such a situation, where she is obliged to do a thing to which she is not accustomed to, another woman is brought in as an additional help.
17. Once when I was hospitalised for some ailment, the doctor remarked that the count of my white blood corpuscles (wbc) was high and that it was a worrisome factor. I couldn’t understand. The wbc is the body’s defence mechanism. The more, the better, I said. The doctor laughed at my ignorance and informed me that the higher wbc count was indicative of greater infection. God is ingenious, he told me.
18. Allah is indeed ingenious. But the trouble is, man thinks he is more ingenious!

48. And the earth - We prepared its crust, and how well have We prepared it!8

Study Note:

8. Imagine what would happen if the earth surface had not its ups and downs: we would not have any land; water would envelope it entirely!

Qur'aanic Verses 51:1 to 51:4:

Transliterations:

1. Waalththariyati tharwan

2. Faalhamilati wiqran

3. Faaljariyati yusran

4. Faalmuqassimati amran

Proscribed!

Qur'aanic Verses 50:39 & 50:40:

Transliterations:

39. Faisbir AAala ma yaqooloona wasabbih bihamdi rabbika qabla tulooAAi alshshamsi waqabla alghuroobi

40. Wamina allayli fasabbihhu waadbara alssujoodi

40. And glorify Him during parts of the night, and post prostrations!6

Study Note:

6. These two Verses tell us that we should keep remembering Allah, with all His Glory, constantly throughout the time we are awake while doing our mundane work. That is, besides our Salah timings as prescribed in Verses 17:78, 11:114 & 2:238. During Salah, of course, all mundane work – and even thought – are proscribed!

Conflicting Voices Within

Qur'aanic Verse 50:17:

Transliteration:

17. Ith yatalaqqa almutalaqqiyani AAani alyameeni waAAani alshshimali qaAAeedun

Translation:

17. When the two frequently confronting voices, one located on the right and one on the left, confront each other5

Study Note:

5. Man has frequently to make a choice between two conflicting urges arising in his mind. To give an example from real life published in newspapers a few years ago, a woman found out that her young son had committed a crime. Her natural instinct was to hide this fact and save her son from punishment he was liable to under the law. But she was an Allah-fearing woman. And her conscience told her that this world’s punishment is better than the punishment in the Hereafter. So she herself took her son to the authorities that day! It is such conflicting views arising in a human mind that this Verse is alluding to here.

Mountains

Qur'aanic Verse 15:19:

Transliteration:

19. Waal-arda madadnaha waalqayna feeha rawasiya waanbatna feeha min kulli shay-in mawzoonin

Translation:

19. And We have spread out the earth and cast4 mountains into it. And We have caused every appropriate thing to grow in it.

Study Note:

4. Science does not yet seem to have come to definite conclusions about the formation of mountains. And this word used here appears to suggest that mountains were thrown or bombarded on to the surface of the earth from outer space. Maybe, eons ago, during the formation of the earth, parts from an exploding star impounded the earth and the mountains were formed. Remember that mountains have deep roots inside the earth. Otherwise they should be flattened out because of the tremendous speed at which the earth rotates.

Treaty of Hudaibiah

Qur'aanic Verse 48:1:

Transliteration:

1. Inna fatahna laka fathan mubeenan

Translation:

1. We have indeed granted you a clear victory.1

Study Note:

1. Verses occurring later in this Chapter indicate that the victory mentioned here is neither that at the battle of Badr nor the conquest of Mecca. In between those two events, Prophet Muhammad [peace on him] had set off from Medina, with some of his companions, to perform Umrah at Mecca which was still in the hands of the polytheists. On their way, the party was stopped at a place called Hudaibiah and not allowed to proceed further. Negotiations between the party and the Meccans followed, wherein, the Muslims agreed to return to Medina that year, and the Meccans agree to allow them to come for the pilgrimage next year. Although the treaty enabled peace for the future propagation of Islam, certain terms therein were apparently humiliating for the Musims. Therefore, most of the Muslims could not then understand why it was being called a victory. They nevertheless reiterated there their oath of allegiance to the Prophet. Only later on did they realize that the extended period of peace they gained was the real victory; for, Islam spread rapidly therein.

Portends of the End

Qur'aanic Verse 47:18:

Transliteration:

18. Fahal yanthuroona illa alssaAAata an ta/tiyahum baghtatan faqad jaa ashratuha faanna lahum ithajaat-hum thikrahum

Translation:

18. Are they, then, waiting for the Hour (the time when the present world will end and the Hereafter begin) to come upon them of a sudden? Portends2 of it have verily come! And what will mention of these [portends] avail them, once it [the Hour] has come upon them?

Study Note:

2. Calamities suffered by ancient peoples like those of Noah and Lot, the Aad, the Samood etc. were but portends of what would happen when the Hour comes affecting the entire earth. Such portends do come even now in the form of hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis etc. But people now hardly take them as portends. They dismiss them as just natural phenomena!

Believer - in a Nutshell

Qur'aanic Verse 46:13:

Transliteration:

13. Inna allatheena qaloo rabbuna Allahu thumma istaqamoo fala khawfun AAalayhim wala hum yahzanoona

Translation:

13. Those indeed who say ‘Allah is Our Lord’ and then remain steadfast, they shall have no fear then, nor shall they grieve!”5

Study Note:

5. Refer also, in this context, to similar Verse 41:30, which is a further elaboration of this Verse here. The Verse depicts, in a nutshell, the character of a believer in this world.

Cattle - a Sign for Mankind

Qur'aanic Verse 40:80:

Transliteration:

80. Walakum feeha manafiAAu walitablughoo AAalayha hajatan fee sudoorikum waAAalayha waAAalaalfulki tuhmaloona

Translation:

80. And you have in them (cattle) benefits – and to satisfy by their means a need in your minds, you are carried upon them, as upon the ship.11

Study Note:

11. Cattle had been giving numerous benefits for mankind during the time of revelation of the Qur’aan. They continue to give numerous benefits even in this modern age. They are still used to drive carts and plough fields in villages where modern facilities have not yet reached. Generation of milk and milk products has become a big business now. Animal hides are used for making various things like belts, bags, shoes etc. Animal meat continues to be a major food item. During Hajj time animals are sacrificed in their thousands, and yet cattle species are far from being extinct. Wild animals, on the other hand, would be in danger of becoming extinct if their hunting is allowed indiscriminately. Herein is a sign, for one who ponders, of divine Hand working behind the scenes, for benefit of mankind.

Meaning of Arabic Word 'Aalameen'

Qur'aanic Verse 1:2:

Transliteration:

2. Alhamdu lillahi rabbi alAAalameena

Translation:

2. The praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds 5

Study Note:

5.  This is the dictionary meaning of the Arabic word aalameen. It is in plural: worlds, and not world. In most of the places where this word has been used in the Qur'aan, it is accompanied by the word Rabb, as in this place. But there are a few places where it isn't, as in Verses 2:47, 3:97, 6:86, 6:90, 21:107 and 29:6. A close study of these latter Verses would show that the word is used in the same sense as in the sentence, "My world is different from yours." Every individual life is one's own individual world in the sense that his/her environment, conditions of living, circle of contacts etc. are different from others'. One's own world is, in other words, one's own individual life. It is to these millions of individual worlds that the Qur'aan refers to as aalameen. Allah thus declares that He is the Rabb of every individual life. If every individual would but submit completely to His will and obey His commands as given in the Qur'aan, the Lord will surely nourish and lead the individual's life to Success and Salvation! In the phrase Rabbulaalameen, however, aalameen would include jinns, angels, all living things (besides human) and all inanimate things in the entire universe as well. Refer in this context Moses’ reply to Pharaoh in Verses 24, 26 and 28 of Chapter 32. (Manzil V).

Hadeeth

Qur'aanic Verse 7:185:

Transliteration:

185. Awalam yanthuroo fee malakooti alssamawati waal-ardi wama khalaqa Allahu min shay-in waan AAasa an yakoona qadi iqtaraba ajaluhum fabi-ayyi hadeethin baAAdahu yu/minoona

Translation:

185. Do they not ponder over the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and whatever things Allah has created, and over the likelihood of their own death being near? What hadeeth74 would they then believe in after this?

Study Note:

74. This Arabic word has been used in the Qur’aan variously in the meanings of (i) story, (ii) discourse, (iii) speech, or (iv) the Qur’aan itself. In the context of the preceding sentence, in this very Verse, the word here could connote the broad statement as under:
The orderly behaviour of the entire universe gives enough proof of the existence of a super-intelligent Being faultlessly governing it. When that Being can so control such a gigantic thing, He can obviously do the far less complex task of managing and controlling, inter alia, every human life. It is this Being – Whom we call Allah – that is guiding mankind in the proper conduct of their lives, through this Qur’aan. Every human being should grasp this Reality before it is too late. No one knows when death would come. It may be just round the corner.
But the word hadeeth came to acquire another meaning after the completion of the revelation of the Qur’aan, and the departure of the Prophet from this world. Centuries after the death of the Prophet, his orally reported sayings, and those of his companions, came to be recorded in writing. And these recorded sayings came to be known as ahaadeeth (plural of hadeeth). Allah Almighty knows all about the future. And at the time of the revelation of this Verse, He was aware of this future meaning of the term hadeeth. He (Allah), in that sense, is disapprovingly hinting here at future generations of the Muslim Ummah believing in such man-influenced, error-prone ahaadeeth in preference to the well-explained teachings in the Qur’aan, which can also be taken as referred to by the pronoun hu in baAAdahu of the Arabic text. The Verse is thus telling us categorically that the Qur’aan is the best hadeeth; one need not go after other ahaadeeth

Rashad Khalifa

Qur'aanic Verse 40:56:

Transliteration:

56. Inna allatheena yujadiloona fee ayati Allahi bighayri sultanin atahum in fee sudoorihim illa kibrun mahum bibaligheehi faistaAAith biAllahi innahu huwa alssameeAAu albaseeru

Translation:

56. Those indeed who raise disputes concerning Allah’s Verses without any divine authority having come to them, there is nothing in their minds but greatness which they will never attain. So take refuge in Allah. He – He alone – indeed is the One to hear, see.

Study Note:

6. Reading this Verse brings Rashad Khalifa to my mind. Did Gabriel or any other angel appear before him to declare the last two Verses of Qur’aanic Chapter 9 as human interpolations? Just because those two Verses did not fit into the mathematical formula he invented to test their genuineness, he had the temerity to virtually contradict Verse 15:9 giving divine guarantee against any such interpolations.

The above is an extract from yet-to-be-published Qur'aanic Studies Manzil VI.
