Fast till Night

1.    This is part of Qur’aanic Verse 2:187. Its translation: And eat and drink until the light of dawn becomes distinct to you from the darkness preceding dawn. Then, fast till night.
2.   This divine directive to believers is in respect of nights during the fasting month of Ramadan. It also gives them a clear direction as regards the exact duration of the fast to be observed everyday during the month.
3.   The divine directive is to fast till night. But most Muslims break their fast at sunset. Is this practice in conformity with the directive? It is important for the Muslims to know this because the Qur’aan tells them, in no uncertain terms, that those who abide not by what Allah has sent down are suppressors of the Truth (Verse 5:44), oppressors (Verse 5:45), and transgressors (Verse 5:47)!
4.   Verse 2:187 itself specifies the exact time when to start the fast. It directs the Muslims to start the fast – not at sunrise, but – when, before sunrise, the light of dawn (daylight) clearly penetrates the darkness of the night. So the night, allowing believers to eat and drink, ends when first daylight comes in at dawn i.e. about 35 minutes before sunrise. And, naturally, the night, allowing believers to eat and drink again, begins when the last remnants of daylight disappear at the end of dusk, i.e. about 35 minutes after sunset.

Is Islam Irrelevant Today?

The question mark in the caption above says it all! There is a widespread undercurrent of doubts, even among Muslims, on the relevance of Islam in the world today. Muslims may not give expression to those doubts openly, but the doubts do assail a majority of them.
2. They see that Islam, as they understand it, prohibits interest; and the highest court in the Muslim country of Pakistan had even directed its government to realign its economic policies on that basis. The government was given some two years to do that; but at the end of the stipulated period the government pleaded its inability. The matter is dragging on indecisively there for years now!
3. In Islam, homosexuality is a crime that militates against the divine scheme. The Qur’aan speaks of an entire people – Prophet  Lot’s – destroyed because of their open advocacy and virulent practice of this crime. But, in this modern world, nation after nation is coming up to accept the aberration in sexual behaviour as natural. Same sex marriages are openly celebrated. Open practice of homosexuality is no longer considered a crime.
4. The Qur’aan says that natural calamities like the earthquake happen with the knowledge, and under the direction, of the Creator of all things, Allah. HE uses these to punish people transgressing divinely laid down law beyond a limit, and to warn others against such transgression. But the modernists dismiss the Qur’aanic assertions as superstitious beliefs. They claim that the calamities are geophysical natural phenomena and have nothing to do with any Intelligent Power exercising any conscious power over them. They, in fact, tend to deny the very existence of any such Power!
5. The Qur’aan prescribes cutting off of hand as punishment for theft and lashes for adultery. Except for a very few countries like Saudi Arabia, such punishments have been abolished in all other countries. The Qur’aanic punishments are now considered barbaric and inhuman.
6. A sister gets half the share of a brother under the Qur’aanic Law of Inheritance. And, one man’s evidence is equated to two women’s, for financial transactions, in the Holy Book. The modern world considers that Islam thus perpetuates an obvious gender inequality.
7. Mentioned above are the points, that occur to me presently, on the basis of which modern world generally considers Islam irrelevant now. Readers may like to apprise me of other points they have come across. But, in the meantime, let me critically examine the points mentioned herein above, one by one.
8. First and foremost, there is the economics question of levying interest on money lent or borrowed. If this interest is prohibited, the entire banking business, as it now stands, would come to a grinding halt. Some Islamic countries have obviated this problem by establishing what they call sharia-compliant banks. What these banks do is instead of lending money on interest as any other commercial bank does, they adopt other means like buying their clients’ requirements themselves and handing over these to their clients. For example, if a client wants to buy a residential flat, the bank will buy it and then give it to the client for use. The client then repays the bank in several instalments extending to a longish period of time. By the time all instalments get paid, the client ends up paying more than what the bank had paid originally for the flat. The difference could even be more than the total amount of interest that a commercial bank would have charged for the deal. So, the sharia-compliant bank gets its dues – not as interest, but as its margin of profit! There are other dubious ways in which such banks carry on their business by getting their dues anyhow, but nominally not as interest.
9. But is it interest that Islam prohibits? This is the question that Muslims themselves have unfortunately failed to examine critically. Their religious leaders have said that the Qur’aan does not define Ar-Riba it prohibits. So these leaders have themselves defined it to include interest in its ambit. But the Qur’aan repeatedly reiterates that it explains or clarifies everything so that its edicts are easily and clearly understood and implemented by the common people (refer Qur’aanic Verses 6:38, 16:89, 18:1, 18:54, 41:3, 54:18, 57:17 and there are other such Verses besides). So all those who say that the Arabic term Ar-Riba is not defined in the Qur’aan, do in fact contradict the Book they consider divine and therefore incontrovertible.
10. My studies of the Holy Book reveal that it does define the term Ar-Riba in Verse 30:39. I have detailed my findings in the book ISLAM AND INTEREST, the first chapter What is Ar-Riba of which explains how the said Qur’aanic Verse defines the term as gain that any party to a transaction contrives or manipulates to get by usurping the rightful dues, earnings or possessions of others. It is this Ar-Riba so defined – and not interest per se – that is prohibited in Islam.
11. As regards homosexuality, one need not be extraordinarily knowledgeable to understand that Nature has imbued the sexual urge in living beings for the specific purpose of propagating their respective species. Normally, this sexual urge is heterosexual between males and females, the two being suitably fashioned for playing their respective roles in propagation of the species. In such a circumstance, sexual attraction between two persons of the same sex is obviously an aberration. So long as this aberration remains shrouded in privacy, the society in general need not be proactively antagonistic, but if it is practised openly and aggressively, society can ill afford to simply sit back and wait for its inevitable ill effects. The Qur’aan speaks of the destruction of the ancient people of Lot, as those people had become aggressively homosexual en masse. It would be wrong to condone this aberration as an individual’s natural inclination or orientation. One could then even say that an individual is naturally inclined or oriented to have sexual relations with all sexually attractive individuals of the other sex. But human society, as we know it, cannot bear the burden of such unbridled heterosexual relations. It will no longer remain human. Homosexuality, if unchecked, too has similarly the potential to destroy human society.
12. As regards the point raised in paragraph 4 above, it is essentially an offshoot of the belief in a super-intelligent Creator of the entire universe and of all things therein. Being the Creator, He has absolute control over every item of His creation. Naturally, those who do not have this belief, condemn it as mere superstition. The inevitable question then that arises is as to why one should have a belief in such Creator. It is a vast subject, which can only be dealt with in no less than a book. Let me then present you the online booklet WHY DO I BELIEVE IN ISLAM. I have tried therein to deal with this question here as succinctly and briefly as possible. Human knowledge is pitiably limited. It cannot provide answers to many, many things that happen. A renowned scientist had once admitted that what scientists are doing is just pick up some pebbles in the vast seashore of knowledge. They are in no position to predict accurately when, why, where and how strongly an earthquake will happen next. In the dismal absence of such wherewithal, mankind cannot but believe in what the Creator says in revealed Scriptures.
13. The Qur’aanic Verse 5:38 prescribes hand-cutting of a thief as an exemplary punishment from the Wise Creator. In view of the very next Verse 5:39, this punishment is to be meted out only to such an incorrigible thief who is unrepentant for his crime or indulges in it repeatedly despite declaring his repentance of earlier crimes. The punishment to such a thief has necessarily to be exemplary, so that others, seeing his amputated arm, are effectively discouraged from committing the crime. Modern-day governments, in the name of humanitarianism, have very light penal provisions of imprisonment for a limited period. A hardened criminal takes it in his stride, goes to prison, and duly resumes his criminal activity afresh after being released. And, with his ill-gotten wealth, he may grease the palms of the police, and thus evade imprisonment again. And seeing his apparent prosperity, others may emulate him. Allah-given law is always better than man-made laws. So is the Allah-given penal provision of giving lashes to a person indulging in adultery! This latter punishment is to be meted out in public. The shame of such a punishment would be an effective deterrent for anyone inclined to commit the offence. And remember, the crime, to deserve this punishment, has to be so openly committed as to provide witnesses thereto!
14. A family constitutes the basic unit of society. The Qur’aan confers on the husband the position of the head of this unit. One cannot but admit that it is a natural conferment in view of the undeniable fact that he has been endowed with a greater physical strength than the wife. The Qur’aan, however, makes it abundantly clear that the wife has rights over the husband just as the husband has over her. The husband’s authority is only a shade above the wife’s just as the prime minister, in a parliamentary form of government, has over other ministers. This slight difference in their respective powers is essential for the smooth conduct of affairs within this basic unit of society.
15. Along with the conferment as head of the family, the Qur’aan puts the responsibility of adequately providing for the entire needs of the family on the shoulders of the husband. That is even when the wife may have her own source of income! In the circumstance, it serves due ends of justice for a man to have a greater share in ancestral property than a woman.
16. The Qur’aan, moreover, generally envisages a distinct division of work between a man and a woman. And their bodies are suitably fashioned accordingly. This does not mean that a woman cannot do a man’s job. She can, but the divine scheme apparently is to make it an exception rather than the rule. In the divine scheme of things, giving evidence on anything, monetarily related or otherwise, is normally a man’s job. A woman comes in only as an exception. It is only in such a situation, where she is obliged to do a thing to which she is not accustomed to, another woman is brought in as an additional help.
17. Once when I was hospitalised for some ailment, the doctor remarked that the count of my white blood corpuscles (wbc) was high and that it was a worrisome factor. I couldn’t understand. The wbc is the body’s defence mechanism. The more, the better, I said. The doctor laughed at my ignorance and informed me that the higher wbc count was indicative of greater infection. God is ingenious, he told me.
18. Allah is indeed ingenious. But the trouble is, man thinks he is more ingenious!

O Allah Almighty!

O Allah Almighty!

Make all Muslims, O Allah Almighty,
Consider it their bounden duty
To read the Qur’aan and understand it
And to try-n-obey its every edict.

And, O Allah, free them thus of ignominy –
The lot, among them now, of so many!

The Earthquake

2. The Earthquake

“No calamity can ever befall the earth and your own selves, unless it is in Our decree before We bring it (the calamity) into being. Verily, this is easy for Allah.” [Q: 57.22].

2. The above is an approximate translation of Verse 22 in Chapter 57 of the Qur’aan. It unmistakably means that Allah knows beforehand when, where and why any calamity takes place. Its occurrence is pre-recorded in His Book of decrees.

3. The sceptics are bound to raise their eyebrows on this divine claim, but keeping aside their scepticism for a while let us consider another divine claim. "Soon will We show them Our Signs in the regions, and in their own selves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (Qur’aan) is the Truth --------" [Q: 41.53]. As per this latter claim, Allah in His mercy gives some signs to help the sceptics get over their doubts about the divine statements.

4. One such sign has recently come to light. It has been lying concealed for fourteen centuries in the 99th Chapter of the Qur’aan, which Chapter starts with a Verse having 20 letters of the Arabic alphabet. The Chapter is entitled, ‘The Earthquake’, and has 8 Verses. The 4th Verse therein, which could literally be rendered as, “The day when its news would be broadcast”, has, in the original, 17 letters of the Arabic alphabet, counting the Arabic letter da, with a Tasdid thereon, twice. The 3rd Verse describes the immediate spontaneous reaction of the people crying out, “What is happening”, when the earthquake strikes them suddenly and devastatingly. The 7th and 8th Verses each contain the word misqaal, which inter alia means a unit by which to weigh or measure.

5. The underlined numbers in the preceding paragraph, viz., 99, 20, 8, 17, 3, 7 and 8, and their sequence are very significant. These numbers have an amazing correspondence with the timing and the severity of the earthquake that struck Turkey recently. This earthquake occurred in the 99th year of the 20th century. The month was the 8th (August) and the date, the 17th. It struck at 3 a.m. and its intensity was measured as between 7 and 8 (at about 7.8 to be more specific) on the Richter scale! Its severity drove people, in their thousands, out of their homes and onto the streets, crying out, “What happened?” And thousands died.

6. Can this amazing correspondence be dismissed as a series of mere coincidences? Let us examine this important question in greater details.

7. Events taking place in a year can well be considered as a distinct Chapter in the book of all events in the relevant century. As such, the numbering of the Chapter on the Earthquake as the 99th of the Qur’aan has a striking analogy to the event of the earthquake in Turkey occurring in the 99th year of the 20th century. It is as if somebody, who could clearly look into the future, consciously numbered it so. There are, after all, 114 Chapters in the Qur’aan and the Chapter on the Earthquake could have been numbered as any one of the other 113. The sceptics may well say, “Earthquakes occur almost every year in some or the other part of the world. Had this particular Chapter in the Qur’aan been given any other number from 1 to 98, the same would have been claimed to be alluding to the earthquake occurring in that particular year.” But, as may be seen from what is mentioned herein above, the signs, alluded to in this particular Chapter of the Qur’aan, are specific to the earthquake that occurred on the 17th August 1999 in Turkey. These signs, together, could not be made applicable to other earthquakes. So, the odds are heavily against the Chapter being numbered as 99th. These are 1 to 113. The chance of its being so numbered is an infinitesimal 0.88%. Even so, let us concede to the sceptics that they have a chance of 1 in 114 here. That is some chance indeed!

8. The 99th year could come in any century. The indication that the earthquake in Turkey would befall in the 20th century is given in the very first Verse, which contains 20 letters of the Arabic alphabet. The link between the 20 letters to the 20th century is aptly indicated by the word izaa, meaning ‘when’, at the beginning of the Verse. Now Verses in the Qur’aan could be containing any number of letters up to over 270 as in the 11th Verse of its 4th Chapter. There could be Verses containing letters still more in number. Making however a very, very conservative estimate, letters contained in various Verses of the Qur’aan could be, at the least, in 100 different numbers. So there could be only one-in-a-hundred chance for that first Verse of the 99th Chapter being of 20 letters. And, the likelihood of both – (1) the Chapter being numbered as 99th and (2) its first Verse containing exactly 20 letters – happening simultaneously would be 1 in 11400, as per the law of probability. The chance – of both the things happening together – is now reduced to 0.0088%. The chance – of all the 7 things mentioned in the foregoing paragraphs happening together amazingly in the one Chapter on the earthquake – would be further reduced to almost an impossibility at 0.00000000000088%. That too, by taking a very, very conservative estimate of only 100 different ways in which the rest of the 5 things could happen. In fact, there are many, many more than 100 different ways that every one of these 5 things could happen.

9. Scientifically and mathematically speaking therefore it would be impossible, by mere chance, for the said seven things to be there in such a combination as to unmistakably indicate the occurrence of the earthquake in Turkey. It was as if the signs were put there in the Qur’aanic Chapter by someone who knew beforehand every detail of the earthquake – fourteen centuries before its actual occurrence. That someone could be none other than Allah Himself. The signs therefore unmistakably point to the Truth that Allah is the Author of the Qur’aan. Not only did the Verses originate from Him, but He also determined the order in which the Verses were placed in the Qur’aan.

10. The sceptics may wonder how the Qur’aan could indicate the date of the earthquake by the solar calendar whereas in Islam the lunar calendar is followed. This apparent anomaly gets resolved the moment it is realised that the Author of the Book knew the future. He knew beforehand that in this age all communities including Muslims would generally follow the solar calendar. Moreover, it is significant to note that the Qur’aan mentions both the moon and the sun as Allah’s signs for mankind to count time thereby.

11. It should very well be noted in this context that Allah’s plan is for mankind to realise the reality of His existence primarily through the faculty of intellectual reasoning, with which it is specially endowed. Mankind has moreover been granted the freedom of choice unlike other animals. Whether one believes it or not, every man or woman has been given a fixed spell of life on this earth, within which to realise that reality and submit his/her self to that reality completely and unequivocally. Human life is nothing but a test for that purpose. Freedom to make a choice is an essential prerequisite of that test.

12. Now if in the Qur’aanic Chapter on the Earthquake, had it been clearly mentioned that an earthquake of a devastating magnitude of 7.8 would befall a section of mankind at 3 a.m. on the 17th of August, 1999, mankind would have been deprived of its freedom. Everybody, aware of such a clear prophecy in the Qur’aan, would know for certain that there is Allah and there would be no question of making a choice in this regard. Allah has therefore given only some indications or hidden signs as mere aids to mankind’s special attribute of intellectual reasoning with which to recognise His existence and thus for mankind to pass the test.

13. The hidden signs in the said Qur’aanic Chapter have to be understood in that perspective. Such signs are to be recognised by means of the very same intellectual or scientific reasoning, as has been done in this case herein above. The obvious theme, otherwise, of the Chapter is the cataclysm that is to happen on the Last Day.

14. But, alas, the bulk of mankind obstinately refuses to make use of the Allah-given gift of intellect to recognise the innumerable such signs that Allah, in His mercy, has been sending down for its guidance!

The Spirit

Qur'aanic Verse 2:87:

Transliteration:

87. Walaqad atayna moosa alkitaba waqaffayna min baAAdihi bialrrusuli waatayna AAeesa ibna maryama albayyinati waayyadnahu biroohi alqudusi afakullama jaakum rasoolun bima la tahwa anfusukumu istakbartum fafareeqan kaththabtum wafareeqan taqtuloona

Translation:

87. And We did give Moses the Book; and, after him, We caused a succession of Messengers to follow him in his track. And We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear signs and fortified him with the Holy Spirit113-116. Didn't you become arrogant and behave haughtily whenever a messenger came to you with what wasn't in accord with your carnal desires? You then accused some of being false; and some, you killed!

Study Notes:

113. In Verses 2.253 and 5.110 too, it is similarly stated that Jesus was fortified with the Holy Spirit. And in Verse 16.102, it is stated that the Holy Spirit (Roohul Qudus) brought the Qur'aan down from the Lord in Truth. In Verses 26.192-194, the Trustworthy Spirit (Roohul Ameen) is stated to have brought the Qur'aan down upon Prophet Muhammad's mind/consciousness. In Verse 58.22, it is stated that the Believers too are fortified with the Spirit (Rooh) from Him.
114. In Verses 59.23 and 62.1, one of Allah's attributes mentioned is Quddoos (Holy). Besides, the Qur'aan states: (i) when Allah fashioned Adam from clay, He breathed into it His Spirit (15.29 & 38.71-72), (ii) when He fashioned Adam's progeny from 'contemptible water', He breathed into it from His Spirit (32.9), (iii) "We sent to her (Mary) Our Spirit", who appeared before her as a real man (19.17), whereafter, miraculously, without the agency of a man, Mary gave birth to Jesus, who was Allah's Word and a Spirit from Him (4.171), (iv) the Angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a period of time, the measure whereof is fifty thousand years (70.4); and they (the Spirit and the Angels) would stand in attention, in rows, on the Resurrections Day (78.38), (v) the Spirit is one of Allah's Commands, and  mankind has been given but little knowledge (17.85)!
115. From the Qur'aan thus, what we know, for certain, is that the Spirit or the Holy Spirit is an entity very close to Allah - so close that He calls it My or Our Spirit. This Spirit it is with which are all human lives kindled. Prophet Jesus (peace upon him) was especially fortified with it so that he could talk to people even while in his cradle and perform many miraculous deeds. All believers are also additionally fortified with it so that they keep to the right path. It was through this Spirit that Allah revealed the Qur'aan to Prophet Muhammad (peace and Allah's blessings be upon him). The Spirit nevertheless is subservient to Allah and would be standing in respectful attention, on the Resurrection Day, before Him!
116. We should be content with the info that the Qur'aan gives us on the Rooh, the Roohul Qudus or the Roohul Ameen. These Qur'aanic terms are beyond the scope of our human understanding (mutashabihaat). We should not therefore speculate over their meanings further with our own human opinions. See Verse 3.7 and also study note 2.17, in this context.

Self-destructive Delusion

Qur'aanic Verses 70:1 & 70:2:

Transliterations:

1. Saala sa-ilun biAAathabin waqiAAin

2. Lilkafireena laysa lahu dafiAAun

Translations:

1. A questioner questions punishment that is bound to befall

2. Those who suppress the Truth.1 There is none to defend ........

Study Note:

1. If a non-believer is told that Allah will punish him for his disbelief, he is bound to question its veracity. “I have been a disbeliever for years now, but no punishment has come to me because of my disbelief” he is bound to retort. He does not believe that this worldly life is a log drawn-out test. He does not believe that Allah would not punish him instantly for every wrong he does. He does not believe that Allah is giving him a long rope. He does not believe that Allah gives punishment in this life itself, only if such punishment is necessary for general continuance of this worldly life, or to give a warning to people that what they are doing is not good. He does not believe in the Hereafter, where he will be judged on his performance in this world and then rewarded and punished accordingly. He does not believe that he will be resurrected after death for this final Judgment. He thinks that this worldly life is the be-all and end-all of human existence. He is in a self-destructive delusion.

Prophet Punished!

Qur'aanic Verse 68:48:

Transliteration:

48. Faisbir lihukmi rabbika wala takun kasahibi alhooti ith nada wahuwa makthoomun

Translation:

48. So wait patiently for your Lord’s decree! And be not like the companion of the fish, calling out in distress.5

Study Note:

5. This is a reference to Prophet Yunus [Jonas]. He was punished – yes, Allah punishes His Prophets too, if they go wrong – because he became impatient of the continued intransigence of his people and left them without divine sanction. After he suffered punishment, in this world itself, he was pardoned for being sincerely penitent. Allah Almighty has given the example of this Prophet for us Muslims to learn a lesson from it. The lesson is that we should never ever forsake our belief – belief in Allah and in His Book of Guidance, the Qur’aan – whatever the circumstances. Our belief is being continuously tested variously – whether through personal losses and calamities or through social setbacks for the community as a whole. We should never waver while on these tests. We should ever be firm and steady. Allah is our Maula. Our success then is assured!

Divine Deal

Qur'aanic Verse 2:245:

Transliteration:

245. Man tha allathee yuqridu Allaha qardan hasanan fayudaAAifahu lahu adAAafan katheeratan waAllahu yaqbidu wayabsutu wa-ilayhi turjaAAoona

Translation:

245. Who is there to lend a good loan to Allah, which He will repay in multiples thereof? And it is Allah Who takes possession of things and amplifies them, and to Him you shall be returned.464

Study Note:

464. Magnanimously thus does Allah offer a deal to His creatures, the human beings. HE wants them to sacrifice, if necessary, the pleasures of this worldly life, which are in any case temporary and unreliable. In return, He offers them everlasting rewards, many many times more in real value.

Ritualistic Reading

Qur'aanic Verse 62:5:

Transliteration:

5. Mathalu allatheena hummiloo alttawrata thumma lam yahmilooha kamathali alhimari yahmilu asfaran bi/sa mathalu alqawmi allatheena kaththaboo bi-ayati Allahi waAllahu la yahdee alqawma alththalimeena

Translation:

5. Those who were given the responsibility of bearing [following the instructions in] the Torah, but did not do so are like an ass carrying a load of books.4 Terrible is the example of those who deny Allah’s signs/Verses! And Allah does not guide the wicked people.

Study Note:

4. The reference, of course, is to the Jews here. But the simile equally applies to most modern-day Muslims. Like how the Jews treat the Torah, the Muslims treat the Qur’aan! Both practise just ritualistic reading of their respective Scripture without bothering to follow its instructions.

Muhammad in Bible

Qur'aanic Verse 61_6:

Transliteration:

6. Wa-ith qala AAeesa ibnu maryama ya banee isra-eela innee rasoolu Allahi ilaykum musaddiqan limabayna yadayya mina alttawrati wamubashshiran birasoolin ya/tee min baAAdee ismuhu ahmadu falamma jaahum bialbayyinati qaloo hatha sihrun mubeenun

Translation:

6. And when Jesus son of Mary said, “O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah to you confirming what was there in the Torah before me and giving good tidings of a Messenger to come after me. His name is to be Ahmed [Praised One].”2 Yet when he has come to them with clear evidences, they say, “This is magic manifest!”

Wrong-doers' Illusion

Qur'aanic Verse 58:18:

Transliteration:

18. Yawma yabAAathuhumu Allahu jameeAAan fayahlifoona lahu kama yahlifoona lakum wayahsaboona annahum AAala shay-in ala innahum humu alkathiboona

Translation:

18. The Day Allah will resurrect them all, they will swear to Him as they swear to you and think they are standing on something solid. Are they indeed not those who are the liars?6

Study Note:

6. Some wrong-doers in this world repeatedly swear to gullible people at large that they are the epitomes of virtue, and they push their ill deeds under the carpet of their swearing. Their repeated swearing creates the illusion in their own selves that they really are virtuous, and they extend their swearing before their Creator as well! They forget their lies would not stand before Him.

Worldly Life through Divine Eyes

Qur'aanic Verse 57:20:

Transliteration:

20. IAAlamoo annama alhayatu alddunya laAAibun walahwun wazeenatun watafakhurun baynakum watakathurun fee al-amwali waal-awladi kamathali ghaythin aAAjaba alkuffara nabatuhu thumma yaheeju fatarahu musfarran thumma yakoonu hutaman wafee al-akhirati AAathabun shadeedun wamaghfiratun mina Allahi waridwanun wama alhayatu alddunya illa mataAAu alghuroori

Translation:

20. Beware! The life of this world is only a game and a pastime, a show, and mutual boasting and out-rivaling each other in riches and children. It is like the growth of vegetation after the rain, which makes the skeptic wonder, but which then withers away, turns yellow and becomes worthless stubble. And in the Hereafter,  severe punishment, forgiveness from Allah and His Pleasure! And the life of this world is nothing but means of deception.

The Great Retraction

Qur'aanic Verse 56:46:

Transliteration:

46. Wakanoo yusirroona AAala alhinthi alAAatheemi

Translation:

46. And they had persisted in the Great Retraction 1

Study Note:

1. There is an inner conviction in every human being that he/she is created by One Powerful Creator Who has also created everything else in the Universe. And he/she intrinsically pledges his/her obedience to that One Creator. But most stray away from that pledge because of carnal desires generated under satanic influence. Remember how Adam and Eve were seduced by the Satan in retracting against their solemn pledge to Allah while they were living most comfortably in Paradise. Those first humans were thrown out into this world of trials and tribulations after their very first act of Retraction. But most of their progeny here, despite being given many chances, persist in the Great Retraction. The Verse here speaks of those wicked people.

Landing on Moon

Qur'aanic Verse 54:1:

:

Transliteration:

1. Iqtarabati alssaAAatu wainshaqqa alqamaru

Translation:

1. The Hour (the time when the present world will end and the Hereafter begin) has drawn near and the moon is visited.

Study Note:

1. The Arabic word shaqqa has a number of meanings. Most translators have given it here the meaning of ‘split’ and thus attributed to Prophet Muhammad [peace on him] the performing of the miracle of splitting the moon in two and then rejoining the two parts. Such a miracle – if it did happen – would have indeed been a unique one! The Qur’aan does say that the earlier Prophets were endowed with the gifts of performing various miracles. But none of such miracles involved moon or any other heavenly body! All those miracles were restricted to things of this mundane world. This miracle attributed to Prophet Muhammad is preposterous on another count as well. Nowhere else in the Holy Book does Allah Almighty mention performance of any miracle – on mundane things or otherwise – as performed by earlier Prophets like Moses and Jesus. The Book, on the other hand, points out the fact that the earlier peoples had failed to follow their Prophets despite the latter showing them the miracles! The stress was therefore laid on Prophet Muhammad’s Ummah to look for miracles in the natural creation of their own selves and of all things around them, and thus attain to faith in Allah Ta’ala. That being the unmistakable tenor throughout in the Qur’aan, it was indeed preposterous for the Prophet to come up suudenly with such an unlikely miracle. Moreover, shaqqa alqamar is meant in this Verse to be the Sign for the approaching end of this world.  There were definitely no signs of the approaching Doom over 1400 years ago when this Verse was revealed. But there definitely are such signs now when nation after nation is engaged in piling up weapons of mass destruction [WMD]. And this piling up was preceded by Man’s first visit to the moon in the late sixties [Watch the Video]. This Verse foretells that visit.
